A Window into the Florida Aquifer
I stumbled onto a pleasant surprise last time I took a little walk through a wooded area near some Florida springs. I had noticed what looked like an old sinkhole. So of course I had to wander over there and check it out. You can imagine my surprise when I found this beautiful tree sitting atop a karst Window.
A Karst Window, also known as a Karst Fenster, is defined as a geometric feature found in Karst Landscapes where an underground river is visible from the surface within a sinkhole.
This karst hole is larger than it looks. It’s actually big enough for an adult to fall into, though you probably wouldn’t sink very deep before getting tangled up in the tree roots, yuck. Also the water is crystal clear in spite of all the green slime clinging to the roots. It was so cool to accidentally discover my first ever karst Window and I’m looking forward to finding many more.
God’s creation never ceases to amaze me. I always feel so blessed when I come across something so beautiful, fascinating and unexpected. I can’t wait to have time to get out again and explore some more.
